The era of digital video has come unnoticed. Indeed, it is difficult to remember the moment when the new movies on CDs and DVDs began to supplant such familiar and native VHS videotapes. Compactness, ease of viewing provided by direct access to media data, low susceptibility to wear, and sometimes the ability to copy without loss of quality - all these advantages very quickly fell in love with users.
However, with the advent of digital video, movie fans suddenly have a new “headache†- the incompatibility of data formats and players. Of course, it would be very convenient to install a single player and use it to view all video files. However, in practice, everything happens quite differently: sometimes, having finally received the desired file, the user launches the player, opens the file and sees a message stating that the desired format is not supported, and it would be nice to install the appropriate components.
The emergence of many video formats due to several reasons. On the one hand, many major market players, such as Microsoft or RealNetworks, have created their own formats in order to capture as much of the market as possible by linking content to their technologies. On the other hand, new projects such as DivX come out from time to time that create new formats that they claim provide better playback quality or more compact data than the standard ones. Some of them are widely distributed, deserve the sympathy of content authors, and ... users have to install new software in order for this content to be viewed.
Currently, most often video files can be found in MOV, AVI, WMV and 3GPP formats, somewhat less often - Real Video (RM). With the last two, everything is clear: there are unambiguous solutions for viewing them.
However, do not forget that MOV, like AVI, is just a container that stores audio and video streams in various formats. And if MOV in the overwhelming majority of cases contains data in formats supported by QuickTime, then AVI, developed by Microsoft about ten years ago, does not have such qualities. Playing a container and playing a video stream - as they say in Odessa, "two big differences." To play such files, the appropriate components must be installed in the system - codecs (short for compressor / decompressor).
It is impossible to grasp the immensity and just as almost impossible to install all the codecs once and for all that you may need to watch the video. However, each computer must have a "gentleman\'s set" installed, which will allow you to view videos recorded in the most popular formats.
