Hi everyone. I posted this in the forum a few days ago, but it was buried pretty deep, so I'm not sure if many people saw it.

There are a lot of journal entries being posted now, but unless you visit the profile of everyone individually, it's hard to find new ones.

I tossed together a new page that should help this: http://www.desktopnexus.com/journals/
It's accessible by clicking the "Recent Journal Entries" link in the bottom left of any page on Desktop Nexus (in the gray footer).

Whenever you post a journal entry, it'll show up on this page for a little while and help you get exposure. Also, it'll enable you to read all the recent discussions going on by other members, so you write your own reply.

Let me know what you think, and if there are any other features you'd like to see for the journal system!

Thanks!

Over the next 6-8 hours, nearly 30,000 happy people will be receiving an email with the most popular wallpapers from the past week on Desktop Nexus. I just pressed the big send button. :)

And of course if you haven't signed up to receive the newsletter yet, do so by visiting your Email Notifications if you're a member, or by using this direct link if you're not a member yet.

Now, off to bed.

Happy Thanksgiving Desktop Nexus!

Sorry the holiday logo today isn't very fancy... I tossed it up in a hurry. If anyone wants to take a stab at making a better logo, email it to me and I'll probably toss yours up instead. :D

I just want to clearify... any private message you send on Desktop Nexus is absolutely private. There's no publishing them to your feeds, no tapping into them from other members, and not even moderators can read them.

The only people who can read your private messages are you and the person you send the message to.

The exception however, if you choose to report a PM for a violation (such as spam) by clicking the Report link in the top right corner, at that point the PM contents will be revealed to a member of the Desktop Nexus staff (though right now, I'm the only one who reviews reported PMs).

Hopefully this clears up a few things. :)

It's been a very long night with tensions high. Tonight Desktop Nexus unveiled completely redesigned, redeveloped, updated, and improved (IMO) profiles! Many months of work went into these new systems, and it was exciting to finally go live with them.

It was an absolute shock to most users, as the changes are quite significant, but after the dust began to settle, I've been receiving almost exclusively positive feedback. 8)

There was a handful of forgotten pieces, or undiscovered glitches that came to light, but they were quickly solved, and nothing major went wrong... so I'm writing this night off as a solid success. :) Granted it's also 4am right now, so traffic is at a minimum, but tomorrow is the real test. When we hit peak hours, hopefully our database server won't falter under all the new load, and most importantly, when the masses of users come flocking in for their daily dose of DN, I'm crossing my fingers that the attitude remains positive. We'll see... but I am very confident. I personally love the new system, and while it's quite a bit different... after using it for a while, it is MUCH improved over the retired pages.

Let me know what you think! Write your opinions in your own personal journal entry and "respond" to this post! Click the "Post Your Response" link below this line! :D

And if you missed the second announcement:

New Profile System!
If you have been a member of Desktop Nexus for a while, you'll notice we've recently undergone some big updates to the My Account and Profile system!

Among the new features are:

  • Fully revamped Private Message system
You can now perform mass actions on PMs, there is additional spam prevention technology, and you now have the ability to report a malicious private messages
  • Fan System
As mentioned in the previous announcement, if you have used Twitter of Facebook, you'll recognize this feature. Now you can become a fan of other members and follow all their activities on Desktop Nexus!
  • Journals!
Journals are essentially a blogging platform built directly into your profile. You can use them to post your thoughts and opinions on site news, world events, personal stories, etc. Additionally, you can respond to other member's journal entries, similar to how the Trackback feature works on blogs.
  • More Granular Email Control
Now you can specify exactly what emails you want to receive from Desktop Nexus (such as if you want to get an email when someone comments on your profile or sends you a PM, but not when a member comments on one of your wallpapers).
  • Invisible Mode
For those who desire to enjoy this site in privacy, there's now a privacy mode, where when on, your username will not show up in the "Online Members" list, and your avatar will not appear in "Recently Spotted Members" blocks.
  • Member Block List
Now if a member is bothering you, you can simply add them to your block list. If a member is blocked, they cannot send you private messages, comment on your profile, nor comment on your wallpapers. This should let you enjoy the site without that member's interference.
  • .. and many more small things
Browse around and explore. There are a number of new updates all around the site. We also plan on continuing to add functionality over the next few months, including the ability to further personalize and customize your profile.

This evolution of Desktop Nexus is very exciting. The member profiles haven't been updated since our inception nearly 3 years ago, and the My Account page has been equally neglected.

But with all new functionality, there are sure to be some initial glitches. [color=#900]If you find any problems, broken links, or glitches with the new systems, or if you would like to share any feedback with us (we'd REALLY appreciate your feedback), please contact us.

Thanks!

Here's the welcome message for those who missed it:

Welcome to Desktop Nexus!
Thanks for joining our community! If you're eager to dive right into it, feel free to skip this welcome message by clicking the Close button in the top-right corner... otherwise let's spend a few minutes exploring some of what Desktop Nexus has to offer.

Who are we?
Desktop Nexus is the world's largest computer wallpaper website. Millions of visitors stop by every month to explore our galleries, share their collections, comment on wallpapers, choose their favorites, and meet new friends. Our community is family-friendly, and one where respectful behavior is required (see our Code of Conduct). Our entire site is 100% free to use and completely safe (no viruses or spyware), so kick back, relax, and enjoy your stay!

Downloading Wallpapers
Desktop Nexus tries to make it easy for everyone to use our site, regardless of your technical prowess. When you find a wallpaper you like and want to use as your computer's background, simply visit that wallpaper's information page and click the big, blue "Download Now" button in the right column. This will engage an interal system which will automatically detect your computer's browser, screen resolution, and aspect ratio, and automatically crop, resize, and remaster the image, making it a perfect fit for your screen! If you're not sure how to set this image as your computer's background, there's a large "Instructions" button in the top-right corner which will guide you through the process.

Favoriting Wallpapers

There are thousands of wallpapers on Desktop Nexus, so how do you keep track of images that you might want to use as your background later? We have developed a system for you to flag wallpapers as your favorites, similar to saving a website bookmark on your computer (which by the way, you should absolutely do for Desktop Nexus :)). Simply visit the information page for the wallpaper you like, and click the "Add to Favorites" tab under the large preview image (you can click it again later to remove the image from your favorites). After you have hand-picked your favorite images on Desktop Nexus, you can view them anytime by clicking the "My Account" link in the top-right corner of any page, then clicking the "Favorites" tab.

Following Your Favorite Members
As you use Desktop Nexus for a while, you're sure to encounter members with similar interests as yourself (their uploads, their comments, etc). We now offer a way for you to become a fan of that member, similar to how you would favorite a wallpaper. If you have used Twitter or Facebook's friend feed, you'll recognize this as similar. To become a fan of a member, first visit their profile by clicking their name anywhere on Desktop Nexus, then you'll see a brown "Become a Fan" button under their member name. Simply click that button, then when you visit your "Recent Activity" page, you'll quickly see what all your favorite members are doing on Desktop Nexus.

Interact!
There's a lot more to Desktop Nexus which you'll discover by exploring our site, but don't be shy! If you like a wallpaper, leave a comment thanking the user for uploading it. If you find a member you admire, leave them a comment on their profile. Stop by our forum and participate in ongoing conversations. Join our Facebook Group! Invite your friends, co-workers, and family to stop by and check us out! Or even leave us a message about what you think of the site (we love to hear from members).

Again, welcome to our community. Enjoy your stay!

This is the first public post on the new DN Journal system!

I know I should probably take some time and type up a nice long entry, but there are a lot of stats to watch and make sure the new profile system launch is a success.

More updates later!
