Eeiter says: "Where there is only an empty spot to be found, the potato should be grown, since this fruit is not only very useful to use, but is also so productive that the effort expended on it is very well rewarded."
Only several famines helped to activate potato cultivation.
However, according to Goeller, people tend to forget that Friedrich was just as vehemently committed to the cultivation of other fruits when talking about the potato. He also paid the appropriate attention to fruit trees with the appropriate commands.
Starting in the summer, an exhibition in the House of Brandenburg History will deal intensively with the topic of potatoes and Friedrich.
Numerous legends surround the king\'s "potato orders", many stories have been passed down for generations and are still popular - such as that of potato fields deliberately poorly guarded in order to encourage the curious rural population to steal the new crops.
And the admirers of Frederick II still insist on regularly decorating his grave with potatoes next to Sanssouci Palace.
The exhibition takes up the legends and myths surrounding Frederick the Great and the potato and examines them for their actual historical content.
She tells how the great Prussian king - forced by crop failures and famine and advised by shrewd economists - endeavored to introduce the potato to his country and promote the cultivation of this new crop.
The show illustrates how traditional farming methods in agriculture changed with potato cultivation and how new agricultural structures emerged.
However, the new food basis also called religious reservations into question, because the question now arose: may a plant not mentioned in the Bible, a "heathen food" from America, replace the daily bread requested by God?
Development history of the potato
The exhibition presents the history of the potato\'s development from ornamental to agricultural crop and traces its import, distribution and use in Europe from the 16th to the 18th century.
It tells everyday history, but also shows the fundamental economic and social changes that resulted from the change in the Central European food system in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Numerous original exhibits from everyday life are presented, agricultural equipment, kitchen utensils, plant preparations, pictures, books and historical documents, but also film clips and audio stations. In addition, 18th-century potato recipes from various European countries promise visitors practical culinary suggestions.
