| About Me: |
I retired from the Royal Navy in 2014, having served in both the regular and with the reserves. I have over over 30 years of service retiring with the rank of Captain.
After arriving in the US, I was invited to attend a meeting in DC and met with officers of the US Navy and with our Embassy UK Defence Team where I was to take up the duties of Liaison Officer to both the RN and USN. I was assigned to Naval Party 1964 (NP1964) which is the UK military personnel posted to Joint Force Command, Norfolk, VA
1982 THE FALKLANDS WAR
After being in the US for nearly two years, I received orders from the MoD to fly out to Ascension Island. The logistics officer on board one of our warships became ill and he was to fly home after receiving care at our base on the island.
Here is the short version of the conflict. The islands are British; won from Spain before Argentine gained Indepenence from Spain.
On the 2 April 1982, Argentine forces invaded the British overseas territory of the Falkland Islands, and South Georgia, sparking one of the largest major conflicts since WW2. Lasting 74 days, the conflict was the first military action since the Second World War that utilised all elements of the British Armed Forces.
I served on HMS ANDROMEDA one of three ships equipped with the new SEA WOLF anti aircraft missiles. What greeted us was 40 feet swells, tenacious Argentine naval pilots flying A-4Q Skyhawks and Super Etendards carrying French EXOCET sea skiming anti ship missiles from the 2nd naval sqn.17 were ordered with 4 operational in 1982 The action that took place in the South Atlanitic was a wake up call for the UK, US, NATO and other world navies. Guided missiles are an important weapon, guns were re- introduced on all new builds. Today, the Falklands now maintain an armed presence of all service branches----------------------------------

Knowledgeable on most military (all branches) I always keep an open mind as I believe everyone has the right to their opinion. My politics I will not share with anyone;partly due to my military background. of course we all have opinions but if we are faced with a country that is d.isplaying hostile intentions, we go when and where we are ordered |
