LinkedIn plans to pull the plug next month on a Chrome browser extension that lets Gmail login and GSuite users see mini LinkedIn profiles for their email correspondents in a sidebar next to email messages, citing low adoption.

The extension, part of the broader LinkedIn Sales Navigator service, was formerly known as Rapportive, prior to its 2012 acquisition by LinkedIn. It is available in free and premium versions. Users of the extension are able to see details such as profile pictures, title, location and “icebreakers,” such as shared connections and experiences, and initiate a LinkedIn connection without leaving the email interface.

It was a tweet that stopped almost everyone at GeekWire and started a conversation in our channel: “What’s the order in which you would drop Apple, Amazon, Google, Facebook from your life, if forced to — from first to last.”hotmail

Today, many of the services that were once offered on MSN have been either discontinued or integrated into other Microsoft products. For example, MSN Messenger was replaced by Skype, while yahoo mail.com has become Microsoft's primary email service.

Downdetector shows outages for other non-Facebook platforms including T-Mobile and facebook login. (Update: T-Mobile says its users are being impacted by other third-party application outages). But Twitter seems to be working just fine.

“The thing I saw at Facebook over and over again was there were conflicts of interest between what was good for the public and what was good for Facebook,” said the whistleblower, Frances Haugen, on the 60 Minutes episode. “And facebook login, over and over again, chose to optimize for its own interests, like making more money.”

This change has been expected since July, when Microsoft unveiled Outlook.com and announced plans to retire Hotmail. It’s the end of an era for the famous (and at times infamous) Hotmail brand.

Outlook.com connects tightly with social networks, integrates with Microsoft’s SkyDrive storage service, and offers a set of tools to fight inbox clutter. The streamlined user interface is designed to bring Microsoft’s consumer email service into the modern world of tablets and smartphones. The company says Outlook.com has quickly risen to 60 million users during its six-month preview, making it the fastest-growing email service on the market. More than 1/3 of those active users during the preview have been active Gmail users, according to the company’s statistics. However, Google has just taken the crown from Microsoft as the king of webmail, at least by one measure.Worldwide numbers provided to by comScore Networks show Hotmail web usage declining by a larger amount than Outlook.com has grown.

The post from Microsoft deputy general counsel John Frank, released Thursday evening, follows the news this week that a former Microsoft employee was arrested on allegations that he leaked Windows trade secrets to a blogger. That blogger’s Microsoft accounts were reviewed by Microsoft’s investigators as part of the company’s internal inquiry, according to a complaint filed in federal court. It’s a hot-button issue for Microsoft, which has taken a hard stand on revelations of government surveillance, and lampooned Google for delivering ads based on the contents of customers’ email messages. Frank opens his post by saying, “We believe that Outlook and hotmail login email are and should be private.”

Griffin and his co-founder Steve Gordon first dreamed of starting a company together while at Northwestern University, but didn’t come up with an idea until after graduation. Gordon took a job at Microsoft, where he worked on hotmail.com, while Griffin went to JPMorgan, working on mergers and acquisitions in New York. The two reconvened in 2011 to come up with Prism, which now seems funny to the entrepreneurs.
