Dr. Rudolf Hauschka was born in Austria in 1891. He was a chemist who became interested in creating natural products that would enhance human health and well-being. In the 1920’s, he found a home in Switzerland and began working with Dr. Ida Wegman, a follower of Dr. Rudolf Steiner’s new philosophy of anthroposophy. This movement was interested in such diverse areas as organic farming, education, art, architecture, and medicine. Dr. Hauschka and Dr. Wegman were interested in creating effective remedies based on the effects of various plants, minerals, and metals on the human body.

The two began experimenting with botanical extracts, trying to find an extraction method that didn’t rely on artificial chemicals or processing. Dr. Hauschka asked Dr. Steiner what the meaning of life was, and Dr. Steiner replied, “Study rhythm. Rhythm carries life.” This inspired Dr. Hauschka to utilize “rhythmic exposure to elemental polarities” in his studies. He also used homeopathic principles to create his natural products. Dr. Hauschka once said, “If one day we understand the rhythms of nature, this will be natural science in its truest form.”

In 1929, Hauschka finally succeeded in creating a stable water-based extract of rose petals that didn’t rely on alcohol or preservatives. That extract remained in a stable condition for 30 years and became the “mother substance” upon which Hauschka built his business. Medicines based on his extracts were well-received by European physicians. Dr. Hauschka founded a German laboratory he named WALA (Warmth/Ash, Light/Ash), after the rhythmic process he had discovered, and began investigating the world of natural medicines.

Dr. Hauschka became friends with Elisabeth Sigmund, another anthroposophist, in the early 1960’s and the two began a correspondence about creating a holistically based approach to healthy skin.Elisabeth Sigmund had already been using some of his remedies in her own skin care products. Dr. Hauschka was so inspired by this work that he founded his unique line of skin care products and facial treatments. His company continues to follow his mission statement today: “To promote the healing of humanity and the earth.” Even their business practices and production methods are aimed at this statement.

The first of their products were released in 1967 and, since then, they have become the gold standards by which natural cosmetics are measured. The company continues to expand their product line. In 1999, they created a line of natural makeup that, while it creates a lovely appearance, also improves the wearer’s skin. They’ve recently added a new line of products for mature skin called the Regenerating line. They also offer body and bath products.
