The American Bar Association and National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) have created a confidential casehandler list that informs attorneys of the status of case closings and the fees they charge their clients. In an effort to increase access to justice and accountability, the association and its members have formed a referral service. The NALA referral program is voluntary and not required for attorneys to participate. However, the organization recommends that its members refer cases to the referred parties only.

Many casehandlers have participated in case handling organizations, but do not want to be associated with any particular case. When casehandlers are independent, handle multiple cases throughout the year, and work with clients of varying levels of experience, they have a conflict of interest. For example, an attorney who has a very low caseload and relies on referrals to make a living may be forced by a client to refer a case to an agency or entity that charges exorbitant fees. This would violate the principles of the ADA and the ethical code of professional responsibility that each case handler member is required to follow. By participating in a case handling organization, the attorney maintains his or her independence and provides fair representation to clients. Also, case handlers generally have better access to government officials and other professionals who can provide important information about their clients\' cases.

Attorneys who participate in a case management program receive detailed case information on an ongoing basis. They also have the option to opt out of receiving case updates or information directly from the law firm. By choosing to remain anonymous, they can maintain the confidentiality of case assessments without being forced to disclose confidential information. In most situations, case handlers understand the value of referral relationships and work diligently to ensure they maintain good ones. Referrals often provide valuable information about a client\'s strengths and weaknesses, which can help the attorney build a strong case and defend it successfully in court.

Many law firms offer case handling programs, providing legal assistance to new and returning clients. Many case management companies are supported by highly trained attorneys and staff members. Some specialize in representing clients with pre-existing legal issues, while others offer specialized support for individuals or families experiencing a first time case. With the support of experienced professionals, case management companies can help their clients to deal with the stress associated with a case, as well as offering critical case management and legal support throughout the case.

Attorneys may belong to professional law firms that provide specific services through case handling organizations. Other attorneys may belong to large specialty law firms that have developed their own specialties in the area of law practice. There are also smaller case handling organizations that focus on serving specific clientele such as immigrants, Native Americans, small business, and the elderly.
Many case handling organizations also offer litigation support. Litigation support professionals work to guide their clients through the legal process. Many offer comprehensive representation at different stages of a case and help their clients develop case strategies that are appropriate for their needs.

Many of these case handling organizations may also counsel their clients on matters not covered under the scope of their case such as insurance claims, workers\' compensation claims, and real estate closings. The experienced attorneys and case managers of these case handling organizations may also assist their clients in preparing their response to legal documentation and negotiating in the court room.
