An interesting article on the topic of Christmas recently appeared on the
With the seemingly simple question "Nazareth or Bethlehem - where was Jesus born?" titled, he devotes himself to various biblical narratives and their contradictions. So the introductory question cannot be answered unequivocally:
In the brochure of a German tourism company for educated citizens, a visit to "Nazareth, the birthplace of Jesus" was announced in the description of a journey through the Holy Land.

Letters of protest rained down. After all, everyone knows that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Yes, everyone knows that.
And yet Mary\'s son was probably born in Nazareth.
The relocation of his birthplace from Galilee to the Jewish heartland is just one of many legends that posterity has woven around the Christmas story.
Because it raises more questions than it answers.
The Christmas story with shepherds, three kings, ox and donkey, which is so often told, does not really come from the Bible either, but consists of a combination of different traditions.
The evangelists hardly agree on any story, so today\'s view of Christmas is not 2,000 years old, but has changed significantly over the course of history.
Numerous other stories circulated, especially in the Middle Ages, and the version of Islam (in which Jesus is a prophet after all) is particularly interesting:
Thus the Koran erases all references to specific places and times. Everything takes place in a mythical nowhere.

In sura 19, a "messenger" of Allah announces the birth of a son to the virgin Mary. She asks, like the biblical Mary: "How shall I have a son when no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?"
The envoy brushes off the question. "It\'s easy for us". Mary withdraws: "And the pangs of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree.
She said: \'Oh, if only I had died beforehand and would have been completely forgotten!\'" With the child she returns "to her people", where she is accused of bringing shame on the clan.
But Maria points to the newborn. People say, "How shall we speak to one who is a child in the cradle?" Jesus answers.
"I am a servant of Allah, He gave me the book and made me a prophet." What is ambiguous, even annoying, in the gospels is in fact eliminated with this miracle -
but with the irritation, so is the magic.
However, the author of the article is not tempted to dismiss all these different and contradictory narratives as vain and insignificant.
This is how it ends with the beautiful ending:
Who cares? The attempt to pick apart truth and legend, stories and historiography is bound to fail. One should savor the wealth of stories that transform the bleak news of a controversial birth in a Galilean nest into a colorful novel.
And just let five be straight before Christmas.
