symptoms

Syphilis

(or French disease) makes itself felt through ulcers on the mucous membranes and lymph nodes. In the advanced stage, organs, the skin and the central nervous system are also affected.

If the ulcers appear superficially, i.e. on the skin and mucous membrane, you will see red, open or swollen changes in the diseased region.

Syphilis first appeared at the end of the Middle Ages and is also known as the "French disease". The name comes from the fact that, according to the "Columbus theory",

the causative agent of syphilis was brought to Europe by Columbus\' voyages of discovery. The syphilis pathogen spread from Spain to France and from there to Germany.

The Germans in the Middle Ages first saw the disease in their neighbors, the French, hence the name "French disease".

Syphilis apparently raged worse than leprosy, was difficult to recognize and difficult to treat.

The disease was transmitted through sexual intercourse or something similar. It is a venereal disease that poisoned the whole body.

The army of Charles VIII of France contracted syphilis in Naples in 1495 and subsequently spread the disease across Europe.

"She spared neither high nor low, neither rich nor poor, and caused bitter sorrows to the hitherto unbound lusts of the flesh. Most of the women\'s shelters collapsed and the bathrooms disappeared because they were the main source of infection, but without people becoming more civilized.

If they no longer had the opportunity to have sex in the baths, morality sank much lower as a result of various circumstances, until a long period of suffering brought people back to their spirits.”

The Anthony Fire

Please Read: ancient armory code

The Antonius fire is triggered by the ergot. Ergot is a dark fungus on grain.
If people ate the ergot or food made from grain containing ergot with the poisonous ingredients, the vessels constrict and circulatory disorders in the heart, kidneys and limbs occur.

The limbs become weak and pale and the pulse can hardly be felt. Tingling on the skin and other sensory disturbances have also been reported.

As the disease progresses, the blood shortage can cause extremities such as fingers and toes to die off.

General accompanying symptoms are vomiting, headaches, diarrhea and delusions. The disease was often fatal.

People did not know that the disease was caused by the ergot fungus.

That\'s why all washing, cleaning and drinking alcohol didn\'t help.

It was not until the 17th century that the connection between the Holy Fire (Antonius fire) and ergot was recognized and the frequency of the disease was thus reduced.

In the Middle Ages, ergot mostly came to humans through rye.

In the 14th century, the Antoniter order made it its task to treat people suffering from St. Anthony\'s fire.

"In the 15th century, the Antonites maintained around 370 hospitals throughout Europe, in which around 4,000 sick people were cared for."

The typhoid

Typhoid is an infectious disease transmitted by bacteria. Transmission occurs through contaminated drinking water or contaminated food.

During the course of the disease, the patient develops a fever that remains consistently high at up to 41 degrees for about 2 weeks.

The patient has headaches and body aches, exhaustion and chills. The pulse is slow, sometimes the patient becomes unconscious.

Externally, typhus is noticeable by small, bright red spots on the front of the body, especially on the abdomen.

Then you get terrible diarrhea alternating with constipation. The intestine is damaged and intestinal perforation can occur.

If you look at the hygienic conditions of the Middle Ages, you realize that this disease was lurking in many foods.

The disease was often fatal. However, if you survived the disease, you were usually immune to it for life.

The anthrax

Anthrax is an infectious disease that mostly affects even-toed ungulates. Humans can also become infected if high doses of the anthrax pathogen are inhaled.

In the Middle Ages, anthrax was used for "biological warfare" by catapulting animal carcasses that had died of anthrax over the wall of a besieged city.

So it was hoped that the plague would spread through the city and destroy the population by the time the city gates were opened.

Anthrax is transmitted through the skin, through the air, or through food.

Anthrax is divided into skin anthrax, lung anthrax and intestinal anthrax.

While only about 15% of those affected die from skin anthrax, the mortality rate from inhalation anthrax and intestinal anthrax is very high.
