The Swiss Alpine Museum in Bern, SAM for short, has set itself the task of presenting cultural life in the mountain world of the Swiss Alps to an interested audience in an exhibition.
Current topics find a place in the exhibitions as well as background information.
Today the museum is located on Helvetiaplatz in Bern, but when it opened in 1905 the Swiss Alpine Museum was on Zeughausgasse.
The premises quickly became too small for the many exhibits, which is why a foundation set up in 1933 built a new building on Helvetiaplatz in 1934, in which the exhibitions are still housed today.
The permanent exhibition extends over two floors and gives the visitor an impression of the nature of the Alps, the relief, the glaciers and gorges, the flora and fauna and cultural customs.

In addition to handicrafts, the museum also has exhibits on folk poetry, rural life and tourism. The visitor is clearly guided through a self-contained world and gets an insight into life in the Alps of today and then.
Constantly changing special exhibitions round off what the Swiss Alpine Museum has to offer. Sometimes the focus is on films about the mountains,
then again on modern developments in the hospitality industry or the art of climbing the summit. Regardless of the topic of the mostly six-monthly special exhibitions, themes are presented in a lively manner and invite the visitor to engage critically with the subject.
The Swiss Alpine Museum attaches particular importance to working with children. In addition to regular tours for the little ones, individual projects are also created to bring children closer to the topic through games and fun.
So it can also happen that a horde of children goes looking for burglars in the individual showcases and collects objects from the mountains that don\'t belong there,
such as sailing ships and cuddly toys. The SAM can be rented for children\'s birthday parties. The little ones will certainly not forget this celebration in a hurry.
The museum at Helvetiaplatz 4 is open Mondays from 2pm to 5:30pm and Tuesdays to Sundays from 10am to 5:30pm. Admission is CHF 12 for adults,
CHF 8 for concessions and CHF 3 for children up to 16 years of age. If you want to travel by public transport, take tram line 3 or 5 at Bern main station and get off at the Helvetiaplatz stop.
