Have you ever come across the word terrarium? What comes to your mind when the word is mentioned? What is terrarium exactly? Here is everything that you need to know as a far as terrariums are concerned.

Let’s begin by answering the question; what is terrarium?

Terrarium in simple terms is a glass container that contains soil and a plant or plants.A terrarium can either be open or closed. However, irrespective of the type, these containers have to be openable for purposes of maintenance.

Terrariums are like gardens that are found in a jar. If you don’t have some space for your garden, a terrarium will give you the chance to come up with your space according to your creativity.

How Do Terrarium Work

After tackling what is a terrarium, the next thing to understand is how do they work? Terrariums creates the desired and unique environment for you to grow your plants. The material used for the terrarium has to be transparent to allow both light and heat to enter your terrarium.

Closed and sealed terrariums create a small scale water cycle. How? By taking advantage of the heat entering the terrarium. How is that possible? When heat enters the terrarium, the plant and the soil will release moisture which will evaporate in the elevated temperatures in the terrarium.

The water vapor will again condense on the terrarium walls and in turn, fall back to the soil and plants below. This environment is ideal for plant growth since there is a constant water supply and will prevent the plants from becoming very dry.

Also, the light that passes through the terrarium will be used by the plants for photosynthesis hence assisting in plant growth.

Are Terrariums Sustainable?

The big question is, are terrariums sustainable? The answer will be YES. Naturally, you need to take care of your plants regularly, but terrarium plants can be left for some time in their devices. Well, at times, you might find that they are not receiving enough sunlight or they are receiving too much for that matter, and you might need to shift them around your room to create the ideal temperature for them.

If a terrarium receives too much light, it will photosynthesize a lot and might leave you with a soggy terrarium that can be prone to mold growth. They require some work but not too much work as compared to the traditional gardens.

One of the questions that most people ask is what is terrarium, and what are some of the ways you can use it? Terrariums are excellent for any person living in a small space and anyone who loves the garden. Terrariums are beautiful, they save on space, and they are low-maintenance, making them ideal additions to any home or business.
