“I was offered the opportunity to write songs for a motion picture based on the huge phenomenal cult book Jonathan Livingston Seagull, and I didn’t have the vaguest idea how to write songs from a seagull’s point of view. So I turned it down. Then I thought a little more and decided to try it. I figured nobody else had much more insight into writing for a seagull, so why not? I threw myself into that project as completely as I ever had before. It was a spiritual story and I had to understand the spiritual nature of its lead character before I could write a note. After about six months of studying various spiritual approaches to life, I was able to make my first breakthrough, which became the first song written – ‘Be.’ When it finally came to me, I remember feeling very elated.
