Early life
Born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 31, 1937, Glass began playing the flute at age 8. His parents were Latvian and Russian-Jewish emigrants who helped Holocaust survivors.
Education
Glass studied at the University of Chicago, Juilliard, and in Aspen. He also studied with Nadia Boulanger and Ravi Shankar in Europe.
Career
Glass formed the Philip Glass Ensemble in 1967. His work includes operas, symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and film scores. He has received multiple Grammy and Academy Award nominations.
