Un insurrecto hab�a sido condenado a morir en la horca. El hombre ten�a a su madre viviendo en una lejana localidad y no quer�a dejar de despedirse de ella por este motivo. Hizo al rey la petici�n de que le permitiese partir unos d�as para visitar a su madre. El monarca s�lo puso una condici�n, que un reh�n ocupase su lugar mientras permanec�a ausente y que, en el supuesto de que no regresase, fuera ejecutado por �l. El insurrecto recurri� a su mejor amigo y le pidi� que ocupase su puesto. El rey dio un plazo de siete d�as para que el reh�n fuera ejecutado si en ese tiempo no regresaba el condenado.
Pasaron los d�as. El sexto d�a se levant� el pat�bulo y se anunci� la ejecuci�n del reh�n para la ma�ana del d�a siguiente. El rey pregunt� por su estado de �nimo a los carceleros, y �stos respondieron:
--�Oh, majestad! Est� verdaderamente tranquilo. Ni por un momento ha dudado de que su amigo volver�.
El rey sonri� con escepticismo.
Lleg� la noche del sexto d�a. La tranquilidad y la confianza del reh�n resultaban asombrosas. De madrugada, el monarca indag� sobre el reh�n y el jefe de la prisi�n dijo:
--Ha cenado op�paramente, ha cantado y est� extraordinariamente sereno.
No duda de que su amigo volver�.
—�Pobre infeliz! -exclam� el monarca.
Lleg� la hora prevista para la ejecuci�n. Hab�a comenzado a amanecer.
El reh�n fue conducido hasta el pat�bulo. Estaba relajado y sonriente.
El monarca se extra�� al comprobar la firmeza an�mica del reh�n. El verdugo le coloc� la cuerda al cuello, pero �l segu�a sonriente y sereno. Justo cuando el rey iba a dar la orden para la ejecuci�n, se escucharon los cascos de un caballo. El insurrecto hab�a regresado justo a tiempo. El rey, emocionado, concedi� la libertad a ambos hombres.
