Putting a new website together? Web3 means that you can no longer just quickly create a logo, some colorful graphics, and a template - throw it all together and make it live! UX counts more than ever in this decentralized era of the internet.

What is Web3 design? How do you create a web experience to draw users in and get them to stay on your site?

In the world of crypto and blockchain when investors are studying and investing - looking up the best market price for Ethereum or trying to suss out the market daily, is becoming ever more important - slick useability and simplicity are key, but its got to go to the next level.

Web 3 brand design

There’s a lot more to a brand than just a logo when you dig deep. Brand design is the benchmark for the identity of a company. If that’s right, all else will fall into place. Everything will connect up and make you look like a coherent business prospect. Of course, this isn’t exclusive to Web3 design, but it’s really important in the world of blockchain and crypto.

Brand design consistency will build trust and Web3 needs a little more of this right now (even though the omens are improving all the time and more people are becoming interested in what it can offer them in terms of online safety).

Web3 website design

The principles of Web3 design are the same as for ‘ye olde internet’ but much more advanced it’s interesting to see how the experts at Nasdaq and other financial news sites like Binance have been covering this in recent months.

What is a website? It’s the shop front for a product, a service or a financial institution. If you’re building a web3 site, it’s a gate that leads through to a platform that’s got to perform well and do what it says it will.

Web3 sites must be welcoming and impressive - visitors have got to want to stay on the site, explore all it has to offer and ultimately invest in the product you’re offering.

However, what is considered to be impressive in Web3? It’s got to make the visitor feel like they’re having a completely different internet experience when they click through. But ensuring you strike a balance is crucial. Your users don’t want to see something that is so far out of their comfort zone they leave immediately as it’s made them feel overwhelmed. Neither do they want to feel that your site is ‘same old same old’ and something they’ve seen a million times before.

Consider both UX and UI

Web3 website design has got to take into account both Web3 UX and UI. Once your visitors are on your site (or app) you’ve got to make double the effort to keep them there.

Products and services like blockchain and crypto are the driving motivation behind Web3 - yet still, site creators are blithely following Web2 UX designs and patterns and some aren’t even considering UX at all.

Of course, many users have been using blockchain since it first emerged and are more than familiar with its complex capabilities, but even so, new UX patterns are going to be needed to make Web3 design stand out from the crowd.

How to address this? Let’s look at some ideas.

3D assets

It’s not always easy to come up with brand-new, never-before-seen ideas in this digital age we’re living in. However, one way Web3 designers are capitalizing is by using or introducing 3D assets into many of their Web3 sites’ design and build.

No - it isn’t new, but it’s not really been considered enough in previous iterations of Web2 design, but ensuring it doesn’t look as minimal as many older sites is crucial. That said, 3D shouldn’t ever hinder the experience of the site user - all it should do is give an aesthetic lift to the site and look attractive, without being overwhelming.

Interactive visuals

Creating an immersive experience is another fantastic way to level up a Web3 website. Think more about how to gamify a site, than making it look heavily corporate.

Interactive visuals can come in the form of animated heroes, parallax scrolling, or hover effects - as is the creation of fresh and fun desktop backgrounds or animations and sound effects that make people want to engage.

This really should be at the heart of all web3 sites, apps, and other products. The bottom line here is if this is a Web3 space being built by creators, it’s got to look like it has! Web3 sites can’t rely on being static - it just won’t cut it anymore.

Customizable interfaces

Changing and having customizable interfaces is another design option that’s gaining more credence. It’s more commonplace than it ever was on Web2, but on Web3 it’s going next level. One of the best examples of this are brands within the rapidly expanding NFT space. Hape Prime has, for instance, used this idea to show off the diverse collection of characters they have in their collection of 3D apes!

How have they achieved this? Well, site users hold down the spacebar and can then switch the ape that appears on their desktop background. It not only looks amazing, but it also helpfully showcases and advertises a much larger portion of their NFT collection - so it’s a way of drawing people in subtly and allowing them to experience an immersive experience, that makes them want to stay on the site rather than navigate away after 30 seconds.
