Mold and mildew are bacteria that thrive in damp conditions common in cellars. It generally does not do much great to eliminate the mold or mildew from the top if you don't eliminate the spores. To get this done, mix equal parts of household bleach and water, and wipe the surface using a cotton fabric or sponge. The bleach won't damage any finish, however the water will if it gets beneath the finish and into the wood. Therefore don't soak the cloth.
