As one of the most hardworking appliances in everyone’s home, the water heater provides the gloriously warm water we need to wash our bodies, our clothes, and even the dishes. Without a functioning water heater, everyone would be taking cold showers, and have less effective methods for getting things cleaned around the home. While water heaters historically can last over a decade, they don’t always have this longevity. Sadly, as a human-made appliance, we can’t always count on them working forever. But how do you know when it is time to throw in the towel and get a water heater replacement? Or should you call your plumber for Salt Lake City water heater repair?

Many assume that replacing a water heater is a costly adventure in home improvements. But if you go to any home improvement store, you will find that a new unit, especially those that aren’t as large are not too expensive. The cost of installation is sometimes what makes the price a little bit more than some can afford. But if you want to replace your water heater, the size of the tank should be considered. If your household has been prone to run out of hot water frequently, purchasing a larger tank can eliminate these worries in the future.

A newer hot water tank will also be highly energy efficient. While almost every tank unit on the market nowadays is an energy saving device, they aren’t quite as good as a tankless unit.

When deciding on whether or not it is time to replace, you will want to look at the age of the unit, its overall condition, and if you have to call a plumber frequently for repairs. In some cases, the cost of repairs is on par with installing a new unit, maybe slightly cheaper for repairs, but well worth the investment in a new one.

Little things like the thermostat needing to be replaced are simple repairs that some can even do as a DIY project. This can extend the life of the unit, and prolong the need for replacement altogether, at least for the time being. If it is in your budget to get a new unit, and yours is over ten to 15 years old, you should consider doing so. There is the option to get a tankless water heater installed in your home too, but these will cost more initially and require a professional plumber that has experience with these units.
