I told her all about the advantages to them over sneakers and took them off to show them to her, and told her that I elected to get them so I wouldn’t have problems at the gym.

I then asked her if the trainer was giving her a hard time about working out barefoot. It turned out, he just walked over to tell her to put on shoes, she said ‘okay’ and he just walked away and didn’t bother her again.

It actually didn’t hit me until I started typing this that he was probably just going through the motions of his job, though in my experience they seem to be more persistent.

The famous double standard perhaps? Reverse sexism? Not sure, but during the rest of the workout, I stayed barefoot as well.

I hadn’t seen her before at the gym and asked if she always worked out barefoot. She told me this was the first time she was told to put on footwear as she normally works out 5:30AM before the trainers arrive.

This trainer that came over she knew was the token pain-in-the-butt policeman. We had a conversation about the advantages of exercising barefoot and how absurd that the gyms and other establishments make up all these rules.

Sorry, but that comes from wearing sneakers. And by law a person who was barefoot cannot successfully sue the gym for these accidents – and they’re insured anyway!

We were cracking up. I noticed throughout the workout that she was about to put her sneakers and socks back on, but would decide to leave them off. Finally when she did put them on, I asked jokingly “don’t tell me you’re giving in!”

She laughed saying she didn’t mind putting them back on for a little while. I went to work out at one of the other machines and when I came back, I saw that she had taken off both her shoes and socks again.

“I don’t blame you,” I commented. We talked about what we do for a living. It turned out she was unemployed and studying to be a personal trainer. I commented that she can open up the first barefoot friendly gym.

Unfortunately society has everyone brainwashed that it is against health code violations and OSHA requirements to have on footwear in establishments, and I informed her otherwise that there is no such health code violation and I have an actual letter from the Department of Health.

“So if they give me a hard time, I’ll just sign a waiver!” she said. I personally have never gotten any place to let me sign a waiver, but I told her to let me know if they give her the option.

I really liked her attitude about how she handled the whole shoe thing – kind of throwing them a bone by briefly putting on her sneakers before taking them off again. I put my Vibrams back on and went upstairs past the cardiovascular area into the private training room to do some stomach exercises.

In there is one of the trainers with a client. Before beginning, I slip off my Vibrams. Almost promptly the trainer – this is a different one- tells me that I need to wear my shoes. I’m thinking since I’m doing stomach and stretch exercises, and I need my feet to be bare.

“You need to bring socks,” he responds. I told him I didn’t have socks with me and he insists that I have to have my shoes on.

“Don’t they have a Yoga class in here?” I ask. “What do they do them?”

“They have on socks. Bare feet are not allowed in here.” I comment that this is unheard of – Yoga with socks? It’s like kissing your sister!

“Talk to the manager,” he tells me. I went back downstairs to find the manager, but he wasn’t there. I came over to my new barefoot friend who now had her socks and sneakers back on and told her what happened.

“No way!” she says re-assuring me. “Of course they come barefoot. It’s the yoga room!” I tell her about the conversation and she replies that the guy is lying. She doesn’t do yoga, so I figure, let me find out for myself.

Before leaving the gym, I ask for the Yoga schedule. I think I’ll check out one of these classes for myself.

Oh, and about the other place that tried to cancel my membership, like the other places that have thrown me out, they have been out of business since the beginning of the year!

Though it was for not paying their electrical bill, I guess what goes around comes around, right?
