She has seen this image change rapidly among many mothers as she has watched them grow as individuals and take on different roles in their families. "The definition of what mother is beginning to be blurred because it is becoming more of a symbol of success in our society," she says. She attributes this evolution to several factors: the expectations society places on women, the increased opportunities for career advancement and balance-of-power dynamics between husband and wife, and the increasing role of the media, which now portrays women as successful entrepreneurs, business leaders, and college moms. "Just like any person, a pregnant woman can be successful at anything she sets her mind to," she continues. "Just ask anyone who was blessed with children, and they will tell you that their greatest accomplishment was having children."
Dena relates a story from one of her Hot Moms workshops where she had participants discuss what their favorite part about being a mom is. The responses varied but popular responses included sharing the child birth stories (hers included), sharing the daily routines, the shopping, preparing food, diaper changing, bathing, and baby sleep-overs. Another popular story had a mom whose favorite thing to do is shopping. Another favorite was the one where the mother cooked all the food the family would eat and then went out to dine on a hot dog. One participant said, "My favorite part about being a mom is cooking, that is my life!" she said with a big smile.
Hot Moms groups are currently underway in seven cities across the Midwest: Chicago, IL; Cedar Hills, Iowa; Fort Worth, Texas; Madison, Wisconsin; Monroe, Michigan; West Chester, Pennsylvania; and New York City, New York. The hope is that more Hot Moms groups will be formed in other areas of the country as well. In planning for the event, participants have discussed creating a Q&A session after each question is answered. Questions could include, "What is your favorite part about being a mom?" to which the answer could be a laundry list including housework, child care, and managing a toddler and baby group.
Each guest should bring a personal item for her or his child that relates to being a mom, such as a small stuffed animal, small baby booties, baby teethers, or baby jewelry such as Swarovski crystals.
