Whether you’re a fine wine collector or just someone who enjoys a glass of wine of an evening, you will need a suitable storage system to store your wines,

whether they are collectables or drinkables. If you buy wines to be re-sold at some stage in the future, storing them at a specialist off-site facility may be the right choice.

But if you buy with the intention of drinking them, then keeping them at home may be the best
option.

Storing Wine at Home

Storing your wines at home depends a lot on the size of your home and what wines you have. If your wines are going to be consumed not long after buying, then a wine rack will be fine.

But if you plan on keeping them for a special occasion then a cellar in your home may be the best option.

Ideally your wines should be stored at a constant temperature all year round, between 10-15 degrees Celsius, and in a humid heat.

They should also be lying down rather than standing upright, this helps to keep the cork in suitable condition, whilst the temperature improves and enhances the flavor, and prevents premature oxidation, which can happen if the temperature is too hot or cold.

If you have a large enough space in your home, then a walk-in cellar is the best option. You can create one using a normal basement, garage or other sectioned off space.

Then, you will need to install a vapour barrier and conditioning unit, and insulate it well so as to keep your wines in the best conditions.

If you don’t have a basement or room in your house suitable for a cellar, you could always build a spiral cellar.

Wine Storage Facility

If you don’t have the room in your home to create a cellar, or don’t have the financial means for an expensive spiral cellar,

you could use a specialist wine storage facility. There are lots of storage facilities around who have special dedicated branches to deal with your wine storage.

By choosing a specific wine storage facility rather than having a cellar in your home, you have the benefit of it being run by wine professionals who know the best way to care for your treasured bottles.

Whatever storage you choose, make sure you take the time to research and store your wines correctly, especially so as to age the reds perfectly and keep them as long as possible.
