I agree unless they are disrespectful to you. Then report them to authorities unless you just don't feel they are even worth responding to. But I believe in giving folks the benefit of the doubt. I believe in treating them as I would like to be treated unless they prove they are just not worthy of it.
Those cases are sad and I try to reach out to them in dignity. I recently had a case where I was cussed out for nothing. I had been a Vet Tech and knew about a Boric acid eyewash for cats and told someone about it. A volunteer at an animal shelter thought she knew the kitten would go blind and even though I cited sites online and gave her civil answers she cursed me in two different letters to me. I finally reported her. Her obscene response online was removed and she was cited for disrespecting and attacking me. I still am bewildered at her stupidity and beligerence.
