I've witnessed the following scenario recently, "O, did you buy, so and so's latest book?" invited the smug reply, "I don't just buy the book -I attend the book signing." Not that there's anything wrong with attending a book signing. It's great. But not so great when it is used to make someone else feel inferior. I got the sense that the person was in fact saying to his friend: I'm more important than you, more "cool" than you, etc, etc. It really is amusing, but also quite sad to watch this constant parade of following the latest fad. It's a form of slavery in my opinion. There is also another drawback to this unending pursuit to fit in: When one blends in with the crowd, one can get lost in it. How refreshing it is to meet someone who refuses to join this ridiculous parade -this chasing after the wind.
