Acrylglasplatten gehören zu den thermoplastischen Platten, die aus Polymethylmethacrylat (PMMA) hergestellt werden und auch unter dem Handelsnamen “Plexiglasplatten” bekannt sind.Es ist eine vielseitige Kunststoffplatte mit einer Vielzahl von Einsatzmöglichkeiten und Vorteilen, die im Extrusions- und Gießverfahren hergestellt wird, weshalb manche Leute sie auch als “extrudierte Acrylplatte” oder “gegossene Acrylplatte” bezeichnen. Dieses Material ähnelt den Polycarbonatplatten, ist allerdings preisgünstig und hat eine höhere Oberflächenhärte, während es über eine geringere Schlagzähigkeit verfügt.
Acrylglasplatten wurden erstmals 1928 hergestellt und 1933 von der Firma Rohm and Haas auf den Markt gebracht. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurden sie zunächst als Flugzeugfenster, Geschütztürme und Vordächer verwendet. Heute sind Acrylglasplatten das am häufigsten verwendete Kunststoffmaterial in unserem Alltag, z. B. für Sicherheitsbarrieren, medizinische Geräte, Möbel, POP-Displays, Büroartikel, Aquarien usw.
