You're right what you say about the maximum speed of the Hawk. But speed is not what the Hawk was built for. It's a training aircraft, for the most part. Besides, 1200 m.p.h. isn't very fast nowadays, even in the 60's it wasn't very fast. The English Electric Lightning could do 1500 m.p.h.. The Tornado can do 1450. There are many more examples of aircraft exceeding 1200.
