Local search is a real plus for many organisations outside of mainland US. At least it could be. If you have a domain with the .co.uk extension then you may think your fine when it comes to local search on search engines such as Google.

For those who are unaware, individuals using a search engine such as Google have the option to search either the whole web or just their local area. By local area we mean the geographical area of their search engines. For users in Scotland, your geographic search engine is the UK. For those in Canada your geographic search engine is Canada - and on it goes.

If you use a domain name from your geographic area then you may think you are fine when it comes to local searches. Someone in the UK entering a search term and requesting a local UK searche should find your site if your using a .co.uk domain right? Perhaps not.

Despite the use of local domain names and optimising your META tags to include the local area, if your web site is hosted in another area then you may find that you rank highly in that area and not your own. Let me explain.

Many web sites are hosted in the US due to price and other factors. Your IP address is normally set by your web host. If your host is in the US then you will have a US based IP address. When a search is undertaken one of the factors used to determine the results is the IP address of the web site. You may find that rather than your web site ranking highly here is Scotland it is ranking highly in the US.

The reverse is also true. If you are targeting and international market and decide to use a .com rather than the .co.uk domain, but host that site here in Scotland, you may find the web site ranks highly in the local search results and very poorly in the US.

Part of your SEO strategy needs to include assessing who you are targeting and if your target is local, whether or not a local hosting company may produce better results from a local search engine. Whilst it may cost a little more to have local hosting, the extra cost may be offset by the extra traffic returned from a local search engine.
