Description: These pollards are very old. The one on the right is completely hollow so that a person or even two people could stand hidden inside. However they would have great difficulty in climbing out.

Description: Pollarding is when trees are cropped of their upper branches for firewood. This actually extends the trees life as the branches can cause the tree to be blown down in gales. These have not been pollarded for many years but here at Burnham Beeches they will resume pollarding shortly.
