| Black nurses now have a place where they can share their wellness expertise while helping the vulnerable communities in which they serve. Michelle Greene Rhodes, the founder of Michelle Rhodes Media LLC in Tampa, Florida, is the brainchild behind the first Black Wellness Magazine,“The Color of Wellness.”
With credible research studies identifying social medical determinants or the non-medical factors such as where individuals live, learn, work, and age, socioeconomic status, and race as critical in influencing an individual’s health, more attention is needed to educate communities on how to lead healthier lives. Michele notes that these social determinants of health have received much attention recently, as research continues to show that a person\'s health can depend heavily upon their zip code and circumstances in life.
“The problem is that we can no longer work silently, or not make time outside of work to educate our communities. ‘The Color of Wellness’ publication is an effort to reach the masses and educate in a more impactful way”, said Michelle, while adding that the issues such as health equity and health inequality must continue to be raised in a big way.
Although the healthcare industry is attempting to address these issues, Michelle notes that they continue to go largely unnoticed. She observes the trend of increased spending on healthcare, yet decreased wellness across the entire population, especially members of vulnerable demographics, and these are issues that must be brought to the table. “We have seen this magnified during the time of Covid-19, during which this concept was born. Blacks have died at a substantially higher rate during this pandemic, and the question is, ‘Why’? Because in many of our vulnerable communities, our health lacked wellness, which is linked and influenced by multiple socioeconomic factors”, said a concerned writer, while offering a solution.
Through utilizing her 20 plus years as a Registered Nurse who specialized in Managed Care (insurance), Michelle was able to see gaps in preventive education and chronic disease, from a high level. “By putting the pieces together, I recognized that the lack of wellness education was most often not in the equation within the lifestyles of communities of color”, said Michelle.
The next step for Michelle was to figure out the best way, with the easiest access, to get information out into the media. She called on some of her best and brightest colleagues to help. In her Facebook group of 4,000nurse entrepreneurs, Nursepreneur Nation, Michelle selected twelve executive contributors with various nursing backgrounds. “They are the core engine of this historic publication. It is because of them that we can now disseminate and discuss topics of wellness that concern people of color the most”, Michelle said. “By taking wellness concepts and well-being education into our hands, we can hopefully save lives by establishing healthier habits earlier in life. | December, 2020 – Physical and verbal abuse, stalking, rape: these are just a few of many reasons why domestic violence is one of the primary causes of homelessness for women and children in the United States. When women want to escape their abusers and leave, a lot of them experience anxiety about how and where to find safe housing and how they can be able to pay for it.
This is why Shante Saulsberry and Sheri Saulsberry are in the beginning stages of creating a center for women. Janice’s Women’s Center will be a full-service women’s shelter with a unique mission of transforming lives. Their focus is to help and house women who are homeless or are in need of safe housing when domestic violence erupts at their home.
“This center is focused on homeless women and women suffering from domestic Violence. We have recognized a strong need for more shelters and professional resources here in Phoenix, AZ,” Shante said.
“We have been working diligently to get “Janice’s Women’s Center” up and running, so we can provide extra beds for women experiencing homelessness or needing a place of safety all while they obtain the skills and resources to take the necessary steps to get back into society,” she added.
The center will be serving women in need and help them in learning new skills necessary to be successful in the future. They will be providing both a 90-day rotational stay in the center’s Transition housing and access to resources in their Day Center. During transition, women will be provided everything they need so they can get back on their feet as soon as possible.
Every transitional housing client will be supported with personalized care that individually fits their needs. Counseling will also be available for all women who stay in a transitional home for any period of time. The goal is to lessen the growing number of homeless women in Phoenix. Also, this is their way of helping women of all need transition back into society with a solid foundation for success. Unlike other traditional centers for women, Shante and Sheri Saulsberry exert all efforts necessary to provide clients with the perfect support services to make sure that employment is secured, long term housing is found, and a successful path forward is open.

When Sister Sara (Holden) realizes it, she challenges Billy (Rossi) that his con game is not really a game after all. She wants to redeem "Brother Billy," whose con game is manipulating his followers with fake miracles, even going as far as using gold glitter and feathers, which he claims are from angels.
"Sister Sara is motivated to serve God and people. Billy is more self-motivated. The script makes the point that we must keep our eyes on God and have discernment in choosing spiritual leaders,” said Holden.
“Leaders are human and disappoint us. Only God can provide perfect, unconditional, unfailing love. I\'m delighted to be cast and working with Richard. The role demands a reverence for the responsibility of what is required," she commented.
Written and directed by Richard Rossi who also played the lead role of Billy, the film exposes deceptions employed by big names in the televangelism industry to defraud followers into believing these preachers claiming to be miracle workers worthy of their donations.
Bitter truth is hard to swallow and Rossi’s film, though may appear provocative for some, serves as the eye opener for people who have been taken advantage of by these con artists claiming to represent Christ but are really the instigator of the culture of greed.
