Their study, reported on in the journal Diabetes Obesity and Metabolism in May 2015, included 247 people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes with an average age of 74 and an average HbA1c percentage of 8.2, and treated with injectable insulin. Diabetics were randomized to receive linagliptin or a placebo...

it was found the people treated with linagliptin lowered their HbA1c levels an average of 0.77 percent.
the risk of hypoglycemia was lower in the linagliptin group vs. the placebo group. The risk was lowered among several high-risk groups: patients with kidney disease, those with lower fasting blood sugar levels, and those using insulin doses of at least 35.6 units per day.
From the above results it was concluded the oral drug linagliptin helped to lower blood sugar levels without causing them to become dangerously low. They suggest more research is needed to discover how linagliptin is able to help prevent hypoglycemia when used with insulin in older adults.
