| Have you heard the name Glaucoma? It is a problem related to eye. It is hoped that everyone has heard about the optic nerve which is a part of our eye. Glaucoma is a condition where it damages the eye’s optic nerve. It is a part which sends images to human’s brain, meaning it enables vision. If the damage to the optic nerve increases then it can cause permanent vision blindness. Glaucoma is usually associated with the elevated pressure in the eye which is known as intraocular pressure. Generally, it is this elevated eye pressure which leads to the damage of the optic nerve.
There are two main types of glaucoma. First is open-angle glaucoma, which is also called wide-angle glaucoma, it is the most common type of glaucoma. In this the structure of the eye appears normal, but fluid in the eye doesn’t flow properly through the drain of the eye. Another type of glaucoma is angle-closure glaucoma. It is also known as acute or chronic angle-closure or narrow angle glaucoma, this type is less common but can cause sudden build up of pressure in the eye. Drainage may be poor because the angle between the iris and the cornea (where a drainage channel for the eye is located) is too narrow.
After the age of 40 one should undertake a complete eye check up to look out that one is having glaucoma or not. Its occurrence also depends upon the family history. As such it doesn’t pain or anything so one cannot make out soon whether they have glaucoma or not.
The main cause of glaucoma is a failure of the eye to maintain an appropriate balance between the amounts of internal fluid produced and the amount that drains away. Underlying causes for this imbalance usually relate to the type of glaucoma one have which are discussed above.
