Not that I'm an expert on Russian naval tactics, but a sub would not surface to launch a missle. That would give it away and a sub survives by being stealthy. But it is a pretty pic.

I suspect this could be the USS MAINE down in Cuba.

With the njack at half staff, I suspect this pic was taken shortly after FDR passed away.

The pic has been mis-titled. The ship is Russian, possibly a heavy cruiser.

Why we go down to the sea in ships.

I was stationed aboard when Midway first arrived at Yokosuka. What a madhouse. There were all kinds of protests and what have you. I was impressed by how polite the protestors outside the main gate were.

At first glance it looks like one damn big submarine at the surface.

As I understand the battle it was the only time battleships form The U.S. and Japan squared off directly. The Kirishima stood little chance. It was a night action and she had no radar. Most Japanese ships lacked radar. It was over fairly quickly.

I'm not exacvtly sure but I do beleieve this may be a British sub and not a U-boat.
